Jeunesse et formation de Pierre Duplessy-Michel, architecte du roi : leçons généalogiques
Les origines et la formation de l’architecte Pierre Duplessy-Michel, « ingénieur ordinaire du roi », concepteur, entre autres, de Notre-Dame de Bordeaux, ont fait l’objet de spéculations depuis cent quarante ans, à commencer par ses date et lieu de naissance. La découverte de sources généalogiques a pu confirmer qu’il n’était pas, contrairement à ce qu’avait pu avancer l’historiographie traditionnelle, originaire de Lorraine, mais d’une lignée de maçons et tailleurs de pierre, les Michel, venant de Gentilly en région parisienne. Le présent article fait la synthèse des éléments biographiques et contextuels concernant les trente-cinq premières années de la vie de l’architecte, jusqu’à son installation à Bordeaux, et tente de combler les principales zones d’ombre concernant sa famille et sa formation.
Early life and training of Pierre Duplessy-Michel, king’s architect : genealogical lessons
The origins and training of the architect Pierre Duplessy-Michel, « ingénieur ordinaire du roi», designer, among others, of Notre-Dame de Bordeaux, have been the subject of speculation for one hundred and forty years, beginning with his date and place of birth. The discovery of genealogical sources has confirmed that he was not, contrary to traditional historiography, originally from Lorraine, but from a line of masons and stonemasons, the Michels, from Gentilly in the Paris region. This article summarizes the biographical and contextual elements concerning the first thirty-five years of the architect’s life, until his settling in Bordeaux, and attempts to fill in the main grey areas concerning his family and his training.
