Dans la bastide de Sauveterre-de-Guyenne (Gironde) : un quartier potier et ses productions au XIVe siècle

Les fouilles préventives menées en 2016 à Sauveterre-deGuyenne ont mis au jour l’existence, à l’intérieur de la bastide, d’un quartier artisanal associant vestiges de l’activité potière et indices d’occupation domestique. Le mobilier céramique découvert, abondant et très bien conservé, offre une image remarquable de la diversité et de la richesse de la vaisselle domestique qui fut produite et consommée dans l’entre-deux-Mers oriental au XIVe siècle. La collection met en évidence un faciès céramique encore inédit en Gironde, spécifique une aire culturelle intermédiaire entre la région bordelaise et la moyenne vallée de la Garonne. Au sein du corpus, la coexistence de pratiques potières plurielles et contrastées soulève la question centrale des processus de production. Abondamment illustrée, l’approche proposée croise données de fouille, examen céramologique et contextuel, analyses archéométriques et références comparatives pour faire un état des connaissances, appréhender les chaînes opératoires, cerner les productions attribuables au centre potier et réfléchir au fonctionnement du quartier. Si certaines hypothèses formulées restent à confronter à de futures découvertes, les résultats de la recherche permettent d’ores et déjà d’établir un référentiel fiable pour l’étude de la céramique locale et régionale.

 Inside the bastide de Sauveterre-de-Guyenne (Gironde) : a pottery district and its productions in the 14th century

The preventive excavations which were carried out in 2016 in Sauveterre-de-Guyenne uncovered the existence, inside the bastide, of a craftsmen area where, at the same time, they made potteries and had a domestic activity. The ceramics which were found in great quantity and in good condition give us a very good idea of the variety and richness of the domestic pots which were made and used in the eastern
part of the Entre-deux-Mers in the XIVth century. The collection makes obvious a ceramic facies, not yet discovered which is specific of a cultural area intermediate between the region of Bordeaux and the middle valley of the Garonne river. In the corpus, the coexistence of numerous and varied pottery practises brings the main question of the method of production. Abundantly illustrated, the proposed approach misces excavation datas, ceramicological and contextual examinations, archeometric analysis and comparative references so as to add to what is already known, understand the chains of operations, help to our understanding of what can be attributed to the pottery area and reflect on how the site functions. If some hypotheses still remain to be confronted to future discoveries, the results of the research already allow us to establish a repository that you can rely on, if you want to study local and regional ceramics.
